Burnable files (bin/cue, mdf/mds, iso, img, daa) - overview

This guide is one of a series of guides that are the TorrentSpy FAQ (part of the *Spy FAQ family).

You may need to extract files before proceeding - if you haven't see: How to handle .rar/.r01/.001 files with WinRar

Also, be sure to check: nfo (info) files - always read these FIRST

So you have burnable file(s)

But you have no idea what to do.... Well, fear not - for here's what you need to know...

TypeDescription
.bin and .cue
  • A .bin file is simply a dump of an actual CD or DVD to a file.
  • A .cue is a "cue sheet" file, which simply tells a CD burner where to burn different parts of the matching .bin file on a CD.
.mdf and .mds
  • A .mdf file is just like a .bin file
  • A .mds file is just like a .cue file
.isoThis is basically a bin, but it doesn't need the cue.
.imgSame as .iso
.nrgThis is Nero's CD image. Alcohol 120% mounts it, both Alcohol and Nero burn it.
.daaOnly PowerISO can utilize that file type at the moment

There are 3 ways to go about using these files:

  1. If it contains video, then it can be played via VLC - see Video won't play? Get audio but no video (or vice versa)? Use VLC - Also see the Video FAQ.

  2. Mount them virtually on your computer without having to burn actual CD/DVD(s).

  3. Burn them to CD/DVD(s).
