Configuring BitTorrent Clients: Azureus (RECOMMENDED)
This guide is one of a series of guides that are the TorrentSpy FAQ (part of the *Spy FAQ family).

This BT client is HIGHLY recommended by your forum volunteer mod/admins. It is multiplatform, but complex and a resource hog, lots of excellent help available.

If you have less than 1GB of RAM (or currently experience performance problems on your machine), then you should use uTorrent (aka µTorrent) instead of Azureus.

Installation issues

Azureus requires Java. If after installation the application will not load, it is because you do not have Java. Other problems may occur if you do not have the latest version of Java. You are not the first to think you have Java when you do not! More information is available on the Azureus site.

Quick guide to set up Azureus

After you have installed Java and Azureus, open Azureus for the first time. An update box should come up, click Update. A configuration box should also have appeared:

  1. Click next and choose your connection speed. I recommend choosing the bottom one (1024kbps). Click next.
  2. NAT/Server port. This is very important. Replace the 6881 with 15000 and click Test. If it is OK, continue to 3). If NAT failed, then you need to forward your ports.
  3. Torrents/Files. You don't need to change anything here.
  4. Click Finish.

Find your maximum UPLOAD speed at here. Now return to Azureus and :

Now just close Azureus and open it again and you will be set for downloading at maximum speed!

Health

Azureus shows the health of your connections using smilies. This feature proves to be quite useful as if for some reason a port becomes unreachable, then the smiley will change, whereas with other clients, you might just think that its slowing down and will speed up later, when really the problem may be with your port and not with the torrent or tracker. After a download has started, usually it will go from grey to yellow and then after a little while to green if everything is OK.

Please click here for an explanation of the Azureus smilies, and for possible solutions

To fix a NAT problem (yellow smiley), you may need to see: IF YOU HAVE A ROUTER: How to forward your ports
